Part 1
It was early morning on the day I began the search for assassins. I as the commander of Fort Blue Blood it is my duty to protect the people of Leyawin County and to destroy all assassins in the area. I walked out into Blue Blood’s courtyard to watch my men as we were preparing to depart to the city of Leyawin. Champion Brogen Gro-Rage whom is my second of command of the fort said he would stay behind today to keep command of the fort while I was away. So I took one of my lieutenants with me Agent Drin Hlaalu was his name. Him and I go way back even to when we were being trained to become Imperial Battle-mages in the province of Morrowind. As I was standing in the fort’s yard Champion Brogen approached me.
“Sir the men are ready when you are.” Said Champion Brogen.
“Good, then tell me Brogen how many of my men are going to the city with me on this day?” I asked Champion Brogen.
“Well sir, I gathered five soldiers, three archers and, two battle-mages. This is not including Agent Hlaalu and you sir.” Answered Champion Brogen.
I stood there for a moment trying to figure out why he had brought me a small platoon. Then it hit me like a hammer hitting steel. He was an inexperienced strategist and, also he was an Orc well known for swinging before thinking. Its times like these I’m glad I’m the commander of the fort instead of him. Otherwise we’d all be dead by now.
“Brogen, do you not realize I’m going into the city of Leyawin and, I don’t need to bring a small army. The count would think I was taking over! Now can you honestly tell that this is what you would want for a search group?” I asked Champion Brogen
“W…Well…Umm…Well no sir, I just thought you were going in there to destroy the assassins once you found them. So I assembled a small strong platoon for you.” Answered Champion Brogen
Well I have to admit. At lest he honest…I shook my head at him and with a smile in my face and the kindness in my heart.
“All I need is ten soldiers. Nothing more and, nothing less. So now all you need to do is place the three archers and the two battle-mages back to their posts and, gather me five more soldiers.” I told Champion Brogen.
I swear it’s like talking to a child sometimes. It even amazes me at times how he even made it to the rank of Champion. Then to make matters worse Brogen blinked at my blankly and nodded his head. Then I thought to myself ‘I hope he gets it right this time.’
Well it was midday till I was approached again by Brogen and, this time accompanied by Drin. Brogen was looking proud of himself when walked into my office with its double doors wide open to have air circulate in and out of the room. However before Brogen even spoke a word I said to him.
“Brogen, I found myself thinking again about how you accomplish the duties I give you on a daily basis and, day in and day out it’s always the same thing. You always think about what you think is best instead of doing what your commander tells you to do. So I’m giving you one last chance for you to prove to me that you can do of what I ask you. While Drin and I are away you will be the ranking officer of the fort. So you will need to do the duties that I do on a daily basis. So if you can do my duties with out any major problems you have proven yourself to me. However if you fail in this task I will have no choice but, to reassign you to a different county or someone else’s command for that matter. Now what do you need to report to me?”
He stood there stunned and after a moment he regained his composure and told me.
“Sir, all ten soldiers await you and Agent Drin in the yard as requested.”
“Thank you Brogen. You are dismissed. Oh, and please shut my office doors behind you once you leave.” I told Champion Brogen
He saluted me and walked out of my office closing the double doors behind him.
“Well sir, that was quit a speech. Were you serious about reassigning Champion Brogen if he fails you?” Asked Agent Drin.
“Yes, and Imperial Dragon Locke will understand why I did. For I’m sending him to the Imperial City so they can reassign him instead of me.” I told Agent Drin.
“Sir I never said the Imperial Dragon wouldn’t understand. My question is just are you willing to lose a strong soldier for such a stupid reason. No offence sir.” Said Agent Drin.
“No offence taken… Well no. I’m not willing to let him go but, if I don’t I’ll go mad... Your right it is a stupid reason really. It’s just I can’t stand him. I mean he’s a great soldier and all it just he doesn’t use his head and, I’m not willing to put up with a soldier who just runs into battle with out thinking it through first!” I told Agent Drin.
I sat at my desk and pondered for a moment or two to think of an idea of how to keep Champion Brogen in the county and out of my hair at the same time and, then it hit me like a shield smashing into me!
“I got it! I’ll just give him a different duty which will assign him out of the fort! It’s brilliant why didn’t I think of it before!” I said.
“Sir, I’m glad you thought of an idea but, what in the name of the Nine Divines are you talking about. You’re blubbering about like a mad fool and, of course no offence.” Agent Drin said with a smile.
After what he said I gave him a stern look telling him never again to say that then I told him.
“I’m going to make him be an Imperial Horseman in the county…Well not really. He’ll actually be in the area between Bravil and Leyawin. So I still have him under my command and, so I can use him whenever I need him.” I told Agent Drin.
He looked at me awkwardly for a moment I guess to make sure I’m not going mad. Then he began to speak but, I could see the hesitation in him.
“Sir, that’s a wonderful idea and all but. What are you going to do about a second-in-command of the fort?” Asked Agent Drin.
I looked at him thoughtfully and smiled as I did. Then I told him.
“That my friend is something you shouldn’t worry about. I have a good idea who I want as my new second-in-command but, first I need to see if he’s up to the challenge. So if you please Agent Drin I have some duties to attend to before we leave.” I told Agent Drin.
He smiled in return at me then saluted me and walked out of my office shutting the double doors behind him. For the next half hour I found myself writing the duty transfer for Champion Brogen. It was a hard decision but, this had to be done. When I was finished with the transfer I wrote on my desk to Champion Brogen stating what needed to be done at the fort while I was away in Leyawin. Once complete I put on my gauntlets and grabbed my shield and helm and walked out of my office and the fort itself.
Once outside I found Agent Drin Standing in uniform awaiting any command that I give him. I also saw that he had placed the ten soldiers into marching order. Then I looked at Agent Drin and nodded at him for my signal to begin the march. Then Agent Drin nodded back in understanding then arose his right arm and told the men to begin marching.
Considering we lost time due to Champion Brogen’s mistake I had the men do a forced march. The road we were on was well used by the legion and some of the citizens, so we made good time getting to the city of Leyawiin. Once to the city gates I had the men halt their march so the gates could be opened. Before I could say a word to the city gate men a soldier from the city wall peered over the wall and called down to us.
“Soldiers of the Imperial Legion, what brings you to the City of Leyawiin this fine day?” Asked a soldier of Leyawiin.
As I looked up I smiled even though the sun was in my eyes.
“Hello, good sir I am Sir Gaberial Crohaven, Knight Bachelor of the Imperial Legion and Commander of Fort Blue Blood. We are here under the orders of Sir Locke, Knight of the Imperial Dragon he is the commander of the entire legion in the empire. We are here today the search the city for assassins whom are breaking the laws of our beloved emperor.”
“Well, commander and thank you stepping up. I’m glad to see a Legion officer taking a search such as this under his direct command. Please enter the city and, good luck with your search.” The soldier of Leyawiin said.
Once the soldier backed away from the city wall and the gates were finally opened the men and, I continued the march into the City of Leyawiin.
