Name: Aldrethi Sethraan, better known as Dreth
Race: Vampire-Dunmer, Ashlander
Gender: Male
Age: 60 (25 as a human and 35 as a vampire)
Occupation: Dreth is a member of the Crimson Scar, a faction of vampire assassins that broke off from the Dark Brotherhood many years ago to worship Sithis as his true sons. At one point, Dreth was highly committed to helping the Scar regain its former power, however he eventually became… distracted. He still remains a full member, but he’s been paying less attention to his duties, much to the disapproval of his superiors. The majority of Dreth’s time is currently spent running all over Cyrodiil, and sometimes even other parts of the Empire, chasing after the whims of one, Haven Raif.
Current Residence: Growing up, Dreth lived in the Ashlands of Morrowind, in the smaller ridges around Red Mountain. He eventually moved to Vivec for a short time, before fleeing to Cyrodiil upon his transformation into a vampire. He made his residence in the halls of the Scar headquarters in Chorrol, though these days he’s rarely ever there.
Weapons: The tribe that Dreth grew up in bestow uniform weapons among all of their men when they reach the age of a warrior. These weapons are made of a steel/silver alkaline with black ebony hilts or handles, both acquired from the various mines in the mountains. Because Dreth excelled in blades, he was given two longswords of this make. Both of these have the tribal crest engraved roughly just below the hilt. Dreth dual wields these swords in battle.
Dreth’s tribe boasts a master enchanter, and whenever anyone accomplishes a feat of great heroism and bravery for the tribe, this person will enchant their weapons as payment. Dreth was fortunate enough to have his swords enchanted when he led the charge against a group of Tribunal missionaries that threatened to destroy his, and other Ashlander tribes if they did not convert. The first sword, Farskype, carries an enchantment that paralyzes its victim for ten seconds (more than enough time to make the kill) while the other sword, Harskype, carries a thirty second Silence enchantment.
Magicka: All members of Dreth’s tribe are taught in the school of Restoration. The women go through extensive training so that they can heal their warriors if they come back seriously wounded, while the men are taught only up to Apprentice level so they can tend to more minor wounds on the battlefield. On top of these spells, Dreth is also well-versed in identifying plants with healing properties, and can mix them into healing potions.
Armor: When he lived in the Ashlands, Dreth was equipped with a full set of heavy armor made of the same steel/silver mix as his swords. Now, however, he rarely has reason to wear this armor, and if necessary he will usually only wear the cuirass and sometimes the helmet.
Civilian Clothes: When not in battle, Dreth prefers to keep it simple, wearing a pair of tan linen pants and sometimes doeskin shoes, though only when it’s absolutely necessary. He wears no shirt, finding them much too constricting, unless of course he’s forced to travel somewhere cold. When conducting official Scar business, he’s required to wear a red linen robe and hood. Both of these are enchanted with a restore health spell, in case the wearer is ever required to be out in the sun for an extended period of time (though they can still only last about ten minutes without serious damage).
Appearance: Dreth is a tall Dunmer, just over six feet tall with a brownish green tint to his skin, as opposed to the more blue color of most Dunmer. This is a trait passed down through his tribe. He his extremely muscular, having worked and trained his entire life to be a warrior. He has several tattoos on his body, the most important of which is once again the tribal crest that covers his chest. On his back is this tattoo which several of the tribesman also have because they feel it is a representation of the spirit of the Nerevarine, who drove out the evil Dagoth Ur from Red Mountain. There are several miscellaneous tribal designs on his arms and wrists as well. There is a bit of scarring both from previous battles and from the tests that he was forced to go through for his tribe, most of which mar his shoulder blades. His most prominent scar is on the back of his neck underneath all of his hair; the Crimson Scar seal that was burned into his skin upon pledging his loyalty to Sithis and the Scar. His hair is long and black, often pulled back or braided in some manner. Because he is a vampire, his cheekbones are now very sharp, where they were once more rounded, while his teeth are pointed and his eyes a darker, duller red than the natural Dunmer eyes. A picture of Dreth can be found here. (This picture is copyright of Ayleid on deviantART, while Xakkima Aldrethi is copyright of Hyascinthe on deviantART.)
Personality: Because of his upbringing, Dreth has a very curious and sometimes alluring personality to Cyrodiilic people. He was taught to always be generous and helpful to allies, and while being fiercely aware of his enemies. He will do everything in his power to assist a friend, but will kill anyone who challenges or defies honor. Even when in battle, his temper is always cool and collected, and the same goes with all other situations. (Well, almost all of them. See re: above, Haven Raif.) He’s far too chivalrous for his own good, and while he respects any woman that can hold her own in battle, feels the need to aid them and be ridiculously polite. While this is very attractive to the richer society that he meets in Chorrol, it can be quite disastrous when a woman doesn’t want his help. He despises any man that disrespects women, and if faced with it long enough, will likely attack.
While his customs are not entirely familiar to most people in Cyrodiil, Dreth tends to have a way with words, even though he doesn’t speak very often. He has a strangely likeable personality, if only for his strangeness, and quite enjoys good company while at the same time being able to stay in happy solitude for hours on end.
Dreth is a fierce believer in the Nerevarine, like most Ashlanders, and finds all other religions slightly overdone and ridiculous. If he runs into any followers of the Tribunal, he gets quite tense and slightly defensive, but does his best to stay calm unless there are no other choices.
Though he willingly serves a vampire cult, Dreth actually despises being a vampire. It goes against everything he stands for to leech off of some unknowing person just to keep himself alive. For this reason, Dreth will only ever feed from a willing participant or a fallen foe. Thankfully, the Scar keeps a few human associates around that happily allow the vampires to feed from them (in hopes that those vampires will dane to sire them one day).
Perhaps the biggest flaw in his personality comes in regards to the ex-Morag Tong assassin, and werewolf, Haven Raif. Though the vampire inside of him despises his closeness to her, Dreth finds himself unequivocally in love with her. She is one of the few women who ever blatantly refused his chivalry, and he tends to go slightly insane with his complete inability to ever understand anything that she does. Over the past year, Dreth believes he’s gotten himself into more trouble because of this one woman than any other event in his past. And yet he keeps coming back for more.
History: There are few societies quite like the Ashlander tribes on the island of Vvardenfell in Morrowind. These Ashlanders are one of the last surviving societies who thrive on the ways of pure warriorism, and survive in the harsh dusty, diseased environment of the Ashlands only because of this way of life, and their pure survival instincts. They were also the only true remaining followers of the prophecy of the Nerevarine before the defeat of Dagoth Ur.
These strict, traditional views and customs were what young Aldrethi was born into, to one of the higher ranking warriors in the tribe. At a young age, boys are merely taught the ways of the tribes, as well as the prophecies surrounding the Nerevarine. When they reach the age of eight, they begin to learn Restoration magic, and at age ten, they are allowed to start training with all different types of weapons. When they reach the age of fifteen, they are fitted with their first set of armor, and are initiated into the tribe as warriors.
When Dreth was only nine, word came from Urshilaku Camp that a the potential Nerevarine had come. Later that year, when he was ten and just starting training, the Incarnate defeated Dagoth Ur. Since that point, Dreth had great respect for the Nerevarine, a mortal who completed great feats of will and strength for a land that he was not born of, and whose inhabitants had treated him poorly. He hoped to have only half as much honor.
An exemplary student with great focus and determination, Dreth excelled quickly through his training, clearly a student of the blade. He eagerly withstood the tests of will and donned his armor with pride when he came of age.
At age twenty, Dreth and the rest of his tribe were faced with a few of the remaining followers of the Tribunal, who attempted to come in and convert them with threats of death. Dreth helped to plan and lead a surprise attack against them at their camp several miles away from his own tribe’s. Though they were successful in killing almost all of the intruders, Dreth’s father was one of the few Ashlanders seriously wounded in the attack, and could no longer serve as a warrior any longer.
Four years later, Chief Dal-Uloth of Dreth’s tribe died of blight, leaving his son Malinos to lead the tribe. A boy of great arrogance because of his standing, Malinos had always had his eye on Dreth’s younger sister Ashami. Up until that point, she had refused all of his advances, but Malinos believed that she would be unable to do so now that he was chief. When he offered her to be his queen, she blatantly refused. Enraged, Malinos raped and killed Ashami and her father, and made her mother watch.
When Dreth came home that day after leading a small group to take out a nest of Cliff Racers, he found his sister and father dead and his mother badly beaten. Appalled that Malinos could be so dishonorable, Dreth challenged him to a duel. Because he’d driven out the Tribunal missionaries and had been given the enchantments for his swords (and mainly because he was a better fighter), Dreth won the duel, and killed Malinos.
By rights, this gave Dreth the position of chief within his tribe, and made his bloodline the new inheritants of the position. However, Dreth refused this offer, too disgusted that the people of the tribe would allow such a thing to happen to anyone. He left the tribe for good.
After such rigorous training to be a warrior, the only place that Dreth could think to go where his talents might be used was Vivec. His mannerisms were not well suited for such a large city, but Dreth nevertheless made a place for himself in the city guard.
In Vivec, Dreth met a bookseller named Karass. Having been so preoccupied with his duties in the tribe, he’d never before had the time to really focus on finding a good woman. Upon meeting Karass, however, he quickly fell in love.
Unfortunately, while on a trip to Ald’rhun to deliver some books to the Mage’s Guild, Karass was attacked and sired by a vampire. She was missing for almost a week while the vampire taught her how to survive with this new “gift,” much longer than it should have taken for her to complete her trip. By the time she returned, Dreth was ready to go looking for her.
Before he could ask any questions of her, though, Karass immediately seduced Dreth. Unable to resist her, he complied with her will. In the midst of their passion, Karass passed her disease onto Dreth and turned him into a vampire.
In the morning, when Dreth was able to finally look at her properly, he could immediately see what Karass had become. Disgusted with what she was, he killed her, and left Vivec. Dreth wandered from city to city for several days, and all the while it became increasingly more apparent that he too had contracted the vampire’s disease. Dreth decided it was time to leave Morrowind for good.
Having refused to feed off of anyone during his trip out of Morrowind, Dreth was in terrible shape when he finally got to Cyrodiil. He had been living only off of rats and any other creatures he could kill, but the blood would not sustain him for long. Close to death, he stumbled upon a small cave, and went inside to spend his last days.
It was there that the vampire Imperial named Valcarr found Dreth, passed out cold just at the entrance of the cave and looking like he hadn’t eaten in several years. Valcarr looked after Dreth in the cave, feeding him human blood from his own personal store until he returned to his health. During this time, Valcarr taught Dreth to accept his new life, to feed only off of willing mortals. He taught him what it meant to be a vampire, what his limitations and new strengths were.
Most importantly, Valcarr taught Dreth about Sithis. He explained about the Crimson Scar, and their split with the Dark Brotherhood, and how Silarian betrayed them. Afterwards, Greywyn, believing he was the only one left, purged himself of vampirism and promptly died. Valcarr, and a few of his brothers and sisters, were the only remaining members of the Scar, and were attempting to restore it to its former strength in Chorrol, far away from the insanity of Deepscorn Hollow.
Believing that he owed his life and sanity to Valcarr, Dreth agreed to travel to Chorrol with him and join with the Scar. Though he did not agree with Sithis or his ways, Dreth helped to rebuild the Scar by finding new initiates and tracking down anyone that owed debts to the Scar. After thirty-five years, Dreth has reached the rank of Ancient within the Scar, and continues to help recruit and collect dues. He knows that Valcarr and the other Blood Royalty plan to get their revenge on the Dark Brotherhood at some point, and Dreth slightly fears finding himself in the middle of a war for a god he does not worship.
About two years ago, during a conflict between the Cyrodiil branches of the Dark Brotherhood and Morag Tong, Dreth met a Dunmer-woman-turned-werewolf named Haven Raif in Chorrol. He was instantly intrigued by her, largely due to her more brazen attitude towards life. They met several times after, even though the creatures inside of them did not approve (and neither did Haven’s fellow werewolves), and they eventually fell into an odd relationship of sorts.
After Haven’s fallout with the Tong, she fled from Cyrodiil to Skyrim. Having angered her by fighting with her werewolf sire and wanting nothing more than to make things right (well, okay, maybe a little more than that), Dreth followed rumor trails until he finally met up with her. He attempted to apologize, but Haven would hear none of it, and in an attempt to get the message across, she knocked him out and left him for dead in the Skyrim woods.
Finally getting the fact that Haven just wanted him to leave her alone (and quite peeved about the fact that she had almost killed him), Dreth became submersed in his duties with the Scar. It was while fulfilling one of these duties that he ran into Haven Raif once more, trying and succeeding at seducing a rich merchant for his money.
Unexpectedly enraged by the site of her taking advantage of another man, Dreth went mad and chased her onto the city rooftops with every intention to kill her and end his misery. Just when he was about to complete the job, Haven asked him to kill her, and confessed that she loved him. Dreth was unable to finish it, and the two came to an agreement to be partners, lovers, equals.
Dreth continues to be a member of the Crimson Scar, but tends to find himself a bit distracted following after Haven. He fears the day that his superiors, especially Valcarr, learn that he is bedding with a werewolf, for he knows that it will surely be his last.
